Rev. Fr. Thomas Gavan Duffy (popularly known as TGD), an Irish MEP Missionary served at Tindivanam from 1920 to 1941. With his missionary experience, he rightly understood that, of all the revolutionary forces, ‘Education’ is the greatest. St. Ann’s Primary School was the spring board to achieve his vision as an educationist and a missionary.
He put his heart and soul for the growth of St. Ann’s School, R.C. Teacher Training Institute, the Model School and the Catechist Training Centre under one umbrella called Catholic Centre. He was the greatest pioneer and transformer for the educational system in the then province of Madras. In his opinion, “The school would be a necessary instrument of virtue and character and an essential pre requisite to the success of any scheme for the betterment of people.”
He continued that “schooling where discipline, alertness and leadership are to be embedded in the bone and marrow of the students. ”
1. To programme the curriculum and activities in the footsteps of Rev. Fr. Thomas Gavan Duffy that the young men and women may have the light of Hope in life.
2. To provide infrastructure and better atmosphere of learning and living the human, spiritual and social values.
3. To give excellent academic programmes and other activities that will help the young men and women to form themselves into selfless agents of social change.
4. To help the young men and women to exercise their freedom with responsibility and to love and serve the society in truthfulness and justice.
5. To create desire in young men and women to cherish the gift of nature and cultural values of our mother country.
Commemorating the one hundred and twenty fifth birth anniversary (1888 - 2013) of Rev. Fr.Thomas Gavan Duffy MEP, an educationist par excellence, St. Ann’s College of Arts and Science was started, espousing his values and principles. The college will prepare men and women as great Hope of the society imbibed with human, intellectual, moral and spiritual values so that they may contribute positively to the development of the individuals, families and the society at large.
